All Google updates bring
with them changes that SEO’ers have to adapt to. Different forms of
link building get reduced in their potency, new adaptations as to
what on-page SEO means, etc, etc. They often bring with them certain
loopholes too.Loopholes have a way of being found and exploited
by the SEO community. Think of software such as Scrapebox which was
designed specifically to maximise the SEO results of the loophole
that meant links can be placed anywhere and still benefit. Which is why you would have thought Google would
have been more careful with it’s loopholes. Certainly loopholes
which seem to encourage spam rather than prevent it. However we have
yet again found that far from cutting spam down, a Google update has
created loopholes that encourage it. Not only that, but these loopholes now mean that
negative SEO is possible. How long will these loopholes last we
wonder.What are these loopholes?
They are created entirely by Google, ironically in
an effort to reduce spam. They idea is simple if a website has
certain indicators which suggest it is spamming to get ranked for a
keyword, or general SEO then that site gets a penalty in the results
pages.
The problem is that this is not so cut and dried.
Think about that for a problem any site that has certain criteria
from outside sources can cause it to get pushed down the search
engines results.
That is the scenario that Google has created.
Whilst it was aiming for sites to be ranked down if it looked like
they were spamming what they have now is a scenario where people can
target their competitors with spam, and get them pushed out of the
way for certain keywords.
This loophole is a major problem for legal
companies, as they can see honestly achieved rankings slip down the
pages.
Yes those companies that achieved high rankings by
underhand SEO methods may well have been hit, but plenty of innocent
sites have been caught in the crossfire, and others will now get hit
with this negative SEO tactic.
We have seen examples which show negative SEO
works, and works well. Google have managed to make a complete hash of
this loophole and as of now nothing from them suggests they are in
a rush to close the loophole any time soon. For now negative SEO
will simply have to be a way of life for online firms.
